The Director of Development provides the leadership, direction and coordination of fundraising strategies and activities to support In The Life Media. The Director is responsible for a multifaceted revenue stream that consists of individuals, foundations, special events, corporations and direct mail.
Summary
In The Life Media is a non-profit LGBT media production company based in New York City. We are dedicated to producing and distributing hard-hitting, investigative stories about real issues facing the LGBT community. Our award-winning television series, IN THE LIFE, has aired on public television for over 17 years. It is broadcast on 247 channels in 36 states nationwide, reaching 75 million American households. The distribution of our cutting edge content is buttressed by emergent new media technologies, such as our web-exclusive videos available online and a portable digital media player that allows viewers to share our work via Facebook pages, Twitter feeds, personal blogs and other social networking and multimedia platforms.
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Development is a high energy, seasoned development professional with a proven track record in building strong relationships with current and prospective donors. Working closely with the Executive Director, senior staff and the Board, the Director will be the catalyst for enabling In The Life Media to achieve its financial goals. The Director will supervise two staff members. The Director will be an integral part of the management team and a key player in the growth and expansion of the organization.
Responsibilities
The Director of Development is expected to:
- Thoroughly understand In The Life Media, its mission and policies, culture, values, history, key stakeholders, programs, finances, strategic plan, and how sources of funding can be integrated to generate revenue and increase visibility;
- Meet fiscal year 2010 fundraising goal of $1.5 million by growing revenue in all categories, including individual giving, foundations, special events, corporations, city/federal grants, direct mail and federated campaigns;
- Identify and support the recruitment of new board members and engage current board members in fundraising efforts;
- Formulate and plan all short- and long-term development efforts in coordination with the Executive Director, senior staff and the Board to create and successfully meet the fundraising plan set forth in the annual budget;
- Help expand fundraising opportunities nationally;
- Act as liaison to direct response consultants, overseeing mail and online acquisition and renewal campaigns, special appeals, telemarketing and other member recruitment and retention methods;
- Oversee and help manage special events, including donor cultivation events.
- Think and act creatively to maximize the potential of new technologies for fundraising.
- Ensure that fundraising goals are met on time; maximize efficiency and use of resources; and streamline fundraising systems;
- Oversee and ensure the highest quality standards for the preparation of proposals and solicitation materials for individual, foundation and corporate donors;
- Ensure that a system is in place for stewardship and regular, meaningful recognition of donors;
- Establish and maintain relationships with donors at all levels; and,
- Stay abreast of philanthropic, economic, and social and community trends related to In The Life Media; ensure that staff and board are informed of changes in trends and initiatives that might impact the organization.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have the following experience and qualifications:
- A minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in multifaceted development work;
- An organized and strategic approach to fundraising with experience in managing, developing and coordinating successful fundraising efforts;
- Demonstrated success in major gift cultivation, solicitation and stewardship, direct response, foundation, government and corporate funding;
- Demonstrated ability to conceptualize and describe funding needs in a way that is compelling and comprehensive to the potential donor;
- Leadership and strategic qualities to develop and manage staff and to direct day-to-day activities and operations;
- Experience developing solid working relationships with Board members and donors;
- Demonstrated experience in developing and managing budgets; computer literate including knowledge of the most up-to-date donor tracking systems;
- A track record as an effective communicator who is articulate and persuasive in written and verbal communications; adept at crafting proposals, donor correspondence and other kinds of materials and making presentations to a variety of audiences; and,
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university required.
Compensation
Salary is in the $65K -$70K range. Benefits include health, dental, vision and life insurance; two weeks vacation; 12 sick days; and 4 personal days.

IN THE LIFE is broadcast on 246 public television stations nationwide, including all of the top 20 viewer markets, reaching 75 million U.S. households each month. This is an outstanding opportunity to work within the television industry/media-space, and gain valuable insight and practical experience in the areas of public relations, marketing and promotions within the LGBT market. This is an ideal opportunity for students majoring in public relations, communications, business, marketing, social services, or someone interested in a career within PR and/or the nonprofit sector.
Responsibilities
The intern will assist IN THE LIFE's Communications Officer, working within a busy, fast-paced Communications department. Responsibilities include but are not limited to; administrative support, station/media relations, community outreach, assembling media kits, drafting press releases and other communications-oriented material. A minimum of a 10-12 hour work week over a 3-month time period is required.
Qualifications
Excellent verbal and written communication, organizational and interpersonal skills are essential! This is a "hands-on" opportunity in a dynamic environment. As such, having a good sense of humor, but a professional approach to problem-solving and staying on task is critical. Familiarity with MS Word and Excel is preferred.

Seeking a production intern to assist in the operation of a busy production office as needed: administrative support, research, field production, editing. 16 to 24 hrs a week commitment; 8 weeks for screen credit; 3 months minimum.
Qualifications
Ability to communicate concisely; computer literate (word processing, data entry, Final Cut Pro, Avid Media Composer helpful). Excellent organizational skills; detail oriented. A good sense of humor, yet reliable and remarkable work ethic. Insightful knowledge of political, health, social, economic and cultural issues facing the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. Strong commitment to social justice and excellent television programming. Although this is a non-paid internship, you will be exposed to all areas of production. This is a real hands-on internship.
