More than 200 guests packed the beautiful Neue Galerie on October 6th for In The Life Media's sold-out inaugural Season Premiere Gala honoring comedian and IN THE LIFE's first host Kate Clinton. The Gala raised $110,000, making it the most successful event in our history.
Kate has long been a friend of IN THE LIFE, having hosted not only our first episode but also five more over the past 17 seasons. She has also provided hilarious editorial bits and took part in our first A Conversation With... segment with Margaret Cho. Beyond her work with IN THE LIFE, Kate has hosted countless special events for our community - as she said at the Gala, "I've emceed the 'benefit of the doubt' for 25 years'". When Kate began her career more than 25 years ago, "being a lesbian comedian was a political act." Throughout, she has received honors from GLAAD, Lambda Legal, the Task Force, and many others.

Our board co-chair, Henry van Ameringen, who presented Kate that evening with our first "Pioneer Award" summed up Kate's contributions to the LGBT community:
The Japanese have a wonderful custom where they honor exceptional persons in the Arts as National Living Treasures. Kate Clinton is certainly our National Living Treasure. With her charm, beauty and intelligence she personifies everything that is good in our community. Kate has been in the forefront of our fight if not from the beginning for a very long time. She has rallied the troops with her pro-bono wit on every subject.
In addition to honoring our good friend, the Gala provided our guests with a sneak preview of our 17th Season. Executive Director Michelle Kristel spoke about In The Life Media's plans for this season, including our shift back to a 30-minute format, our new advocacy program, Education = Action, upcoming stories, such as The Trevor Project, HIV Is Still A Big Deal, and our January show, focusing on the damage done by so-called "ex-gay" programs, and our one-hour special celebrating the 40th Anniversary of Stonewall that will air in June 2009.
