Hosted by Tony-award winning actor, Cherry Jones, this month's Encore IN THE LIFE, "Inside Out", features a collection of stories, including, A Call to Duty, that looks at the army's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy through the experience of one person who had to go back into "the closet" in order to reenlist following the events of 9/11; Madame Speaker, recounting Christine Quinn's historic rise as the first woman - and openly gay one - in the predominantly male maelstrom of New York City politics to becoming the most influential legislator in the city's government; and a Real to Reel that recounts the hysteria that swept Smith College in 1960, when three gay professors were ensnared in an undercover sting operation, through the film: "The Great Pink Scare." |

A Call to DutyIn "A Call to Duty," you will meet former Army Specialist, Jeff Howe. The events of 9/11 inspired him to make a personal decision that would radically change his life. Jeff's story underscores the troubling ramifications of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." |
Madame Speaker"Madame Speaker" profiles Christine Quinn whose election in January 2006 as the Speaker of the New York City Council marked an historic moment. Quinn is the first woman and the first openly gay person to ever hold this position. Quinn initially made her mark as a grassroots activist, but her passion for the rough-and-tumble world of politics was perhaps inevitable. It's deeply imbedded in her DNA. |
The Great Pink ScareIn the 1950's and early 60's, an anti-pornography hysteria swept the country. This crack-down took a particularly dark turn at a small liberal arts college in western Massachusetts. This month's Real to Reel examines The Great Pink Scare, a powerful documentary that chronicles the story of how three gay professors became ensnared in this law enforcement web. For filmmaker Tug Yourgrau, it was an eye-opening journey, particularly after he interviewed the two surviving professors. |
